Tim,
Just to clear up one of your points, West Marine took over the
retail sales part of Boat/US, not the entire operation. West
Marine sells the Boat/US memberships under the West Advantage
Plus, maintains the warehouses for retail and special orders
and runs the rigging services that both Boat/US and West Marine
stores use. Boat/US still focuses on the consumer advocacy,
towing services and insurance. The West Marine insurance is a
separate entity and not affiliated with Boat/US. It is a bit
confusing at times...

I'd like to report a pleasant conclusion to this problem. After your many
informative replies I decided to start by getting quotes for 'normal'
insurance from BoatUS, AAA, and Allstate. I applied over the web to BoatUS
and AAA. BoatUS replied in two days, and AAA has yet to reply after 2 weeks.
The BoatUS quote was for $302 for $25,000 hull insurance, $100,000
liability, or, for an extra $14(!!!), $500,000 liability. I took the latter.
BoatUS required a survey, and stated that it could be a maximum of 2 years
old. Mine was 25 months, but they accepted it.
The curious thing about this is, BoatUS is West Marine. Why on earth would
they (West) not rationalize their insurance business somehow? I can
understand some discrepancy, but $302 vs $965 - doesn't make sense.
Thanks again for all your assistance.

Subject: lv-ab: West Insurance Premium
I just got my insurance renewal from West. They have changed carriers from
OneBeacon to ACE/INAMAR. The premium went from $423 to $965/yr. No claims,
changes, nothing. A couple of questions for the group:
1) I'd heard premiums in general had gone up for a number of reasons. Is
this increase, more than double, representative?
2) I'd be happy to self-insure the boat ($25,000 value), but I'm concerned
about liability coverage. Should I be concerned? What are the practical
chances of causing serious, expensive, damage at 5.5 knots? Is it possible
to get liability coverage separately?
Any responses would be appreciated. Up until now I've tended to just pay the
darn insurance and not think about the details, but maybe its time to get
educated. Maybe I should talk with Al Golden...
