I am curious what others do to prevent and repair Aluminum and
SS corrosion. I am going to write down what I do, but would
really like to know if anyone discovered the "right formula" to
deal with this problem in saltwater.
Here is what I am doing now:
For ALUMINUM where it is pitting or corroding I have been
repairing corroded areas on aluminum bythe following process:
Brush out the whitish corrosion with a stainless brush,
polishing the area with Bar Keeper's Friend or Bon Ami,
passivate with vinegar, flush the treated area with boiling hot
water, and then fill the crevices with whatever type of hard
paint I have on hand - usually Rustoleum brand enamel. There
ought to be a better passivating primer and epoxy paint
combo....but I don't know about them.
Some STAINLESS don't ever corrode where others seems to create a
lot of rust stains which also runs onto the surrounding gel
coat. For rust stains I know of nothing better than to use the
same Bon Ami or Bar Keeper's Friend and scrub at it with a rag.
Does anyone have a favorite method?
Other STAINLESS parts corrode rapidly and the surface becomes
eroded and porous. When I find this type of corrosion - often
on flat washers - the best solution is to pitch the part and
replace it. The same with the NYLON washers used to separate
stainless from aluminum parts. I can clean the washer and that
helps a little, but it is better to just replace it.
I'm sure it is a problem we all deal with; I'd like to know some
more solutions.
Thanks, Roger L. F28
