Last year I removed the tank on a friend's Grampian 28. I persuaded him to
replace it after I spent a horrible night on board inhaling fumes. First job
was to remove the gas ... he assured me it was "almost empty". So I crawled
into the locker and started pumping ... and pumping. It was almost full. Of
course I had the blower running, but still it was hairy. The tank barely
fit through the cockpit locker, but we managed to haul it out. It was rusted
out in the bottom, with a slow leak. The tank was galvanized steel.
I think Monel is a better bet, but no doubt expensive now.
I hate gas. Spent years fighting fumes on my boat, replaced all the hoses,
finally had the fuel pump professionally rebuilt, while I rebuilt the carb
and sealed the gasket edges. No more gas boats for me.
