My experience has been just the opposite. I would not give up my Martec
folder. With the Martec I can steer just as well in reverse as in forward. To get
to a lift for a short-haul one time, I was asked to come in stern first. There
was no room to turn around at the lift so I traversed the marina area, having
to make several 90 degree turns. When I arrived at the lift area the yard
workers said they had never seen a sailboat negotiate the route without having to
stop/go forward/go to reverse again.
My Martec was damaged, not by me (long story). I put on a 3 blade fixed prop
& found I had NO control in reverse. There was just no way to compensate for
the prop walk.
I sent my damaged prop to Martec & had it repaired & rebuilt. Cost: $550.00,
but well worth it.
