We just got back from the Miami Strictly Sail show with questions about
what type dinghy to get, and how to take it cruising. We decided to
ask advice from this list.
There was a strong push from some to sell inflatables with inflatible
floors, on the theory that you deflate it and store it below on long
passages or when leaving the boat for a long period of time. We saw
one Aqua Dutch inflatible that seemed to be able to do that.
But we heard a contrary view in favor of having a hard bottom
inflatible. One of the proponents of the hard bottom dingy suggested
the best way to take it, was with a patented Dinghy tow apparatus,
where the inflatible is towed with the back tubes raised off the water
next to the transom, with the nose only floating in the wake close
behind the boat. Has anyone on the list used the Dinghy-Tow apparatus.
There is a great description in their web page at
http://www.dinghy-tow.com/
Claims are the motor can be stored on the transom of the dinghy and its
ready to go in a minute. They also claim you can handle a bigger dinghy
and motor if you go this way. It sounded good. We would appreciate any
advice and experience. Thanks for advice,
