One method that works quite well is too sand it , first clean then
smooth.
Use awlgrip paint to cover the mast .The epoxy primer that is used sticks
very well to the aluminum. It also builds up very well and provides a very
smooth substrate for the topcoat . It's often sprayed but I have had fine results
with a brush.
