That's what we did. We had the same issues -- some paint adhering like
crazy, other areas just peeled off. Plus the spars were painted brown, I
guess to make them look like wood at a distance. We sanded, primed with
zinc chromate, then epoxy primer, then Awl-grip. The Awl-grip tech guy
talked me through it. Beautiful job, looks fabulous, and except for the
fact that we had to do the mainmast in two parts (top half, then bottom
half) it was pretty easy.
