The other consideration is water temp where you do your boating. Up
here in northern New England, early in the season you have trouble
getting your hands to work if they have been in the water for a
couple of minutes. If you're most concerned about MOB recovery in
colder climes, you may be better off with a block and tackle that
you can hook to your davits and clip on to the MOB.
It is probably going to be less expensive to get a swim ladder and
a passerelle. Garelick just came out with a really slick looking
gull wing ladder (http://www.garelick.com). Ocean Marine Systems
has an interesting MOB retrieval system that can double as a swim
ladder (http://www.oceanmarinesystems.com).

Marquipt has a lot of ladders, gangplanks etc... http://www.marquipt.com/
probabably expensive too :-(. but they have many pictures on the site that
may give you some ideas..
do you have a swim platform? if so that's the best place for a swim ladder.
when the boat is on anchor and water will be calmer at the stern...
windline makes some nice ladders, with life time guarranty
for dock to stern boarding, I considered building one using alumium profiles
(from home depot) and even maybe starboard for the walking surface. never
got to the point of looking at fittings but that shouldn't be a problem and
will depend on your boat. shoudl be cheap... soem alum L shape profiles
for the sides, some smaller U shapes to connect, a bunch of bolts... some
starboard.
problem using the same device for side and stern is taht you usually need
something much longer at the stern which will extend to far on the side,
especailly on a finger dock. I have one of the self levelling ladders on
the side, they work nicely, although must be expensive... came with the
boat.
