David, have you looked into using battery combiners? They are much safer
than the diode isolator and will carry surge currents up to 1000 amps. They
have an unlimited warranty which you won't get on your diode isolators.
They allow each alternator to be directly connected to a battery bank with
no switches to accidentally be opened and damage the alternators. They have
no voltage drop so you don't need the very dangerous external sense and the
batteries get a full charge. You don't have problems with tachometers or
exciting the alternators.
I am biased, we manufacture the combiners and sell them through West Marine.
You can download owner's/installation manuals from our website at
www.yandina.com. We've made them for over 10 years and have over 25,000 now
out in the field.
