hi folks
I am refurbishing a Lagoon 42 and in the middle of undoing all the previous improvements quick fixes and band-aid repairs by Previous Owners Marine Engineers Friends and Experts (POMEF&E’s)
She has two Volvo MD2030B engines with French VALEO A13N285M Alternators - these are 80 Amp internal/integrated fixed on the back regulator style alternator with an insulated ground. The port engine also had retrofitted by a knowledgeable friend - ho hum an API 20026 94 Amp Alternator with external VR1200 regulator its output was wired directly into the house battery switch. There is a Shure Power 3603 Diode Battery Isolator this has two alternator inputs 160A and 120A and with three battery out connections. We have two engine start batteries and will soon have a new house bank of Concorde Lifeline AGM’s batteries around 800/1000AH capacity either 4 x 4D’s or 4 x 8D’s. We also have an HFL 8KW generator. A Heart 20 2000W Inverter Charger and a Link 1000 battery Monitor. Now the API 2026/VR1200 combination has allegedly never worked and when I looked at it all the wires were all over the place and not attached to either the alternator or to the regulator - also it !
is facing aft so is rotating in a different direction from the engine alternator.
Problems are.
Exciting the engine alternators if I connect the output of the alternator to the Sure Power battery isolator.
The tachos don’t work.
Finding a wiring diagram for the API 20026/VR1200 combination and getting the post assignments for the 20026 so I can connect them together.
Is the 20026 unidirectional I heard that some alternators “prefer” to go one way to get maximum cooling from the fan.
I would like to get away from driving the tachos from the alternator if that is possible easy and not too expensive.
I am also looking for a 2” marine tacho preferably not alternator driven.
Does the Volvo MD2030B have an alternative tacho output or a place for a sensor to drive a tacho.
Getting info recommendations on “the best” three stage regulator and how easy is it to convert the French VALEO A13N285M Alternators to accept a three stage regulator.
Finding the cheapest source of suppy and shipment of 4 x Concorde Lifeline 8D batteries to St Croix USVI’s. The best price I can find is $300 still trying to get shipment costs.
Costings to build a good efficient fridge and freezer also what kit to purchase what insulation to use and running costs AH wise.
I think that will do for starters.
Thanks in anticipation and kindest regards
David
