In a message dated 1/27/2004 12:05:09 PM Eastern Standard Time,
     writes:

I haven't see this one happen myself, but maybe a lot
of opening and closing of the top would hasten the
    demise of the flexible connector?
I had this happen to me. Foolishly, I routinely powered down the laptop by
closing the lid. Eventually the data wires broke. I replaced them by chopping
off the plugs and replacing the wires by soldering in all 22 using tone arm
wire I happened to have. Foolishly, I neglected to also replace the backlight
wire that went through the other hinge. The rig still sits in the to-do pile.

Jan's laptop took a tumble and broke the screen. Replacement from Dell was
$400+ and "refurbished" with some minor blemishes on the screen. I put it in
    myself.
