Dear Live-Aboards,
The list is quite secure, and we have never had spam resulting from it.
Quite simple measures keep it safe from spammers.
Of course, we've had the occasional advertiser, but that's not "spam".
When the list started 11 years ago, the main place on the Internet for boat
people was "rec.boats" on Usenet. Yup, just one newsgroup. There was quite a
debate before it split into rec.boats.cruising and others. Unfortunately,
the spammers have harvested Usenet for years, and if you put an address out
on Usenet just once nowadays, the spam flood begins within hours. I tried an
experiment like that recently ... quite amazing. So, never, ever leave a
live address out on Usenet.
Likewise, a Web site with an e-mail address in ASCII text is just a gift to
spammers. Of course, my Department had all our addresses out there for years...
hide addresses in GIFS or JPEGS.
Cheers,
Stefan Mochnacki
