     a quality charger is critical to battery life. 3 phase chargers seems to be
    best to
    reduce water loss.

    Not only three stage charging but temperature compensation is critical to long
    battery life.
    In the days when boat only had a couple of Group 27 batteries, it was often
    cheaper to simply replace batteries every couple of years.

    Today's modern cruising boats often have large and expensive battery banks
    and critical systems that depend on reliable electrical power.
    That changes the picture dramatically. It also means that charging sources
    deserve a great deal more attention.
