Looknig for more advice (no kidding)

Apparently, the battery charger on my 1973 GS41 has died. Looks to be
original equipment, so i guess 30 years is a reasonable service lifetime.

The reason i think it's dead is i noticed dimmer lights the other night as
i was reading, then the next day, no 12V. THe meter read low voltage on
both batteries when i checked. Hooed up a car battery charger (i know, but
it's what i had in the storage unit), left it overnight, everything is
    working fine.

When i put the voltmeter across either pair of outputs on the charger (with
the batteries disconnected), i read a few mV. Tried it with the batteriesd
connected, but i opresume i'm reading battery voltage in that state. Didnt
think to try it with teh batteries discharged. Should I run them down and
    then try?

If it is dead, i took a look at West Marine and found a bewildering array
    of choices.

Looking for the short list of good and bad, pro and con.....

    Thanks,
    jim

    Living aboard and loving it!
