In a message dated 1/5/2004 8:03:05 AM Eastern Standard Time,
     writes:
am getting sold on the idea of a 12V genset. In giving it some thought, it
seems the technology to convert from 12V to 110V is much better than 110V to
12V - I don't recall seeing battery chargers available in more than 30 amp,
except in very large sizes, and certainly not over 100 amp.
My 2.5KW Trace inverter, operating in the 120 vac to 12 VDC mode, will charge
my house batteries at up to 140 amps. It works very well in each direction.
It is microprocessor controlled and all parameters are adjustable.

Although I do have a genset, I also have a propellor shaft generator. It is
20 KW, and mostly used to run my welder at anchor (with the controllable pitch
prop set to neutral), I have also used it underway to charge the house
batteries when they were low. The shaft v-belt (5 part, common back) is 19" in dia
(3:1 reduction gear) and I have thought of putting a substantial 12 volt
    alternator on it.

I didn't have the space for it on my boat but I do like the idea of a PTO to
    operate a generator.
