The discussion has turned to the Honda EU 2000. Naturally this unit would
not compare to the high priced spreads, and there will be a compromise or
two. But, so far Tim's 5 criteria and proposed use has been upheld with the
    suggestion of the Honda.

It will charge the batteries by plugging the 110 outlet into the
shorepower system, and it "should" run his AC. It is easy enough to find
out. I have personally seen it start and run 12k units..

Tim's primary criteria is battery charging.
This suggest that any genset should deliver DC directly rather than
through a series of conversion steps each of which has a few percentage
    points of losses.

The Mermaid 12,000 BTU air conditioner can be run on a 1000 watt
    inverter.
I have personally conducted tests with this unit and managed to start and
run it with a 800 Watt Prowatt provided the compressor and circulation pump
is sequentially started instead of simultaneously.

Regardless of what size battery bank Tim uses, he will benefit from a
smart charging source that minimizes engine run time ( Honda or other )
and a system which has the least amount of conversion losses in the
    process.
Using the 110V Ac to drive a shore power charger is not gong to be very
efficient. Nor will it be practical for any but the smallest house bank
    sizes.

He further stipulated that the motor should be diesel instead of
gasoline. However if he already has propane on board this is a viable
option for a converted gasoline motor. Several people mentioned the
hassle of having to refuel a small genset. WHY?
Any such portable genset can be connected to a larger tank. A tank larger
enough to provide many hours or even days of running time.
When I designed a test van we used a Honda genset and plumbed it into the
    main fuel tank.
We also stripped off the carrying handles and muffler and replaced it with
an externally mounted "extra silent" muffler located outside the van. The
genset itself was mounted inside a sound shield inside the body of the van.
