Regarding the conversion of your Yanmar raw water cooled diesel to heat
exchanger cooling, I am by no means very knowledgeable about
diesels...electronics is my main bag, but I DO know that raw water
installation is NOT standard for this type set up anymore, hasn't been for
decades, so I would imagine that the diesel would be plenty happy if the
heat exchanger was installed correctly. I do not think it would be difficult
to do this...it is not a real big deal. You need to make sure the heat
exchanger is large enough capacity...and yes, you would probably have to go
with a different thermostat. There shouldn't be much of a temp difference if
done correctly, in fact the heat exchanger should allow BETTER temp control
of the motor.
I have heard of installing an electric motor pump for the heat exchanger,
but am not sure what is 'standard'...perhaps some of the qualified experts
on the list could be of help here? (Hint, hint...Help!)
In any case, I would convert the motor from raw water cooling to heat
exchanger as it will result in much less deterioration over time with this
type engine. -Ken
