Simplest e.mail is Pocketmail, but it requires a phone. A wonderful, reliable service. The phone is toll free in US, not Bahamas. I like to send a message to file my trip plans and don't always go ashore, so this is a problem. It will work with certain cell phones, but is slow and unreliable. If it is free time it is not bad, but it may take 15 minutes to get a few e.mails after it aborts several times.
Tomorrow I take the Ham Morse Code exam, then I can try WinLink Ham e.mail on Ham SSB, this is highly recommended. (I passed Tech & General written exams already.) There is also Sailmail on Marine SSB, $200/year, requires 2 FCC licenses (Station & Restricted Radiotelephone Operator), but there are no exams, just file online and pay about $200 in fees by credit card. The entire Marine SSB setup with modem for e.mail will set you back $2-4k + installation. This radio will then work on both Ham and Marine.

been reading this stuff with some interest can anyone advise me the most stable way to do e-mail and "maybe" updating a website while sailing in the Caribbean apart from using a web cafe.

      thanks in anticipation

      kindest regards
