I have a halon extinguisher in the engine room. My boat was recently
surveyed, and i was told that the halon extinguisher would not qualify as a
required extinguisher, but that it was a good idea to have it. The
surveyor also told me I should have it checked (weighed) periodically, so I
assume it's still available.
If it's in an engine room or other confined space it should not kill
you. If properly sized it should displace the air in the space and put out
the fire. Eventually it would leak into the living spaces, but I would not
think it would be concentrated enough to be a health risk. Your mileage
may vary.
