My chain pipe opens horizontally, with a cover that slides over the opening
on slots, and has a slot for the chain, so it closes off about 90% of the
surface area. I can send you a picture if you like. It was made by Ideal,
the same folks who made my vertical windlass.
I've also heard of folks using modeling clay to close off the opening. I
sure wouldn't want it hardening up in there though, so you might need to
find one that was non-hardening. You can also use it to seal off your prop
shaft from the outside before repacking.
