The full saying is:
A pint's a pound, the world around (as long as your world consists only
of the US and a few pseudo colonies). When quoting "imperial measures"
please remember whose empire ;-)
For "back of envelope calculations" most people use 10 lbs per gallon, 6
gallons per cubic foot. For most of the calculations that you perform on
a boat, I would recommend getting it roughly right & allowing a large
margin for error - if 21,542 lbs will sink the boat, that doesn't mean
you can carry 21,541 lbs safely!
