Lee, I believe in overkill because someday, it might make the difference
between being heard and not. Marine RG8U has the copper braided shield
tinned and if it says Mil Spec, the shield is more dense. Dave mentions
RG213 about which I am ignorant. But, if RG213 is tinned and meets Mil Spec,
I'm all for it. It is also reassuring if the cable is made by Belden or an
equivalent manufacturer.
Each connection is at least a db loss in signal. So, if possible, do not cut
the wire between radio and antenna. GAM makes some exceptional antennas -
ones with a can and a stainless wire of about 36". 3db is about the max you
want at the masthead as the exaggerated movement at that height would make
higher db antennas provide a "broken-up" signal. Lastly, tape and silicone
the masthead coax connection to the antenna.
Finally, if you lack confidence in your ability to solder the connections,
get a pro to do it.
