Although folks dragging up and down the ICW can (depending on celphone
reach) participate in internet based on-line cruising forums via a web
enabled cellphone, that capability pretty much dwindles as a function of the
distance you cruise from the US/Australian shores. Then the nets are all
radio based.
These nets are usually voice based because of limited time restrictions and
the physical through-put for Marine/HAM SSB-based e-mail systems (for
instance, you may have logged in here at 56K, SSB throughput is generally
less than an old 1900 bps modem). In other words, you just can't afford to
be a member of a high traffic volume group. Satellite is an option, but at
thousands of dollars for equipment and at dollars per byte rates, you've got
to be pretty rich to afford to participate in a high volume e-mail group.
