    I agree. I had a Standard Horizon digital panel gage depth sounder on my
    last boat. Quit working after about 3 months and nothing we could do
    (replaced the display twice and the transducer once) would make it work.
    POS. I got an Apelco (now Raymarine) simple fishfinder and worked like a
    charm forever. Matter of fact, I put the same unit on my new boat... same
    results.

    If you wanted a portable one, get one of those handheld depth sounders that
    you can lower over by cable and read the depth.
