As implied in your message, you are approaching this matter very carefully.
A healthy but cold woman sailor died in the shower on a sailing vessel
returning up the Chesapeake from a race. It was CO from the instant hot
water heater. This was several years ago and I think the story was that the
vent was partially or fully blocked. So, proper installation and maintenance
of most things is key. When I had a sailboat, I always turned on a 12V
exhaust fan when taking an ordinary heat exchanger hot shower to simply
reduce condensation in the head. Wouldn't this be a prudent additional
safeguard? Further, why not place the unit outside the head on a bulkhead a
few feet outside the enclosed head?

| Just a note for those considering propane tankless water heaters. I was
in
| Seattle last Saturday at Fisheries Supply and saw a brochure on a new
| "Ventless" propane instant hot water heater, I believe made by Bosch.
I'll
| retrieve the brochure from the boat tonight for anyone that wants
additional
| information.
|
| I recently decided AGAINST an instant hot water heater because of the
| venting requirements and cubic area of space required around the unit. I
| didn't want to punch a 3" vent pipe hole through my deck and add a 6'
| stack... Apparently the new model detailed on the brochure has some sort
of
| oxygen or CO sensor and shuts the unit off if it detects a problem.
