You spend $200 for a .50 part because the .50 part costs you 10 hours screwing around, and then it breaks again next week. The repair center doesn't want to fix it for more or less the same reason, plus they know you'll be unhappy and piss on them about their prices, which they don't need. You could try to get the cable at any electronics liquidatioin house - most large cities have them. They stock all sorts of parts and junk. The trouble will be finding the correct connectors.

It's a $$$ vs. time vs. reliability thing.

Subject: lv-ab: Flex cables-Does anyone know how to replace them?

I have a LCD display as part of my Tach, its the hour meter.  Well the
connection to the device's PCB is made by a Flex cable(I think that's the
correct terminology) and it has cracked.  I called the manufacturer of the
instrument, Siemans VDO and they said I couldn't get the LCD sub-assembly,
mind you I could even give them a part number that is embedded on the LCD.
They gave me a phone number to one of their repair centers.  That guy just
said to buy another instrument, didn't even offer to repair my unit.  I know
this world is built on throw away technology but why spend $$195 if you ony
need to replace a 50cent part.
Can anyone give me a clue?
