Wrapping with tape has two drawbacks though:
1) It traps moisture underneath which can cause corrosion. I understand a lot of spreaders get rotten tips because of those anti-chafe rubber boots being taped on so well.
2) It hides any corrosion or fatigue which can't easily be inspected for.
I don't have the answer, just asking another question to further confuse the issue :)
