I've had key ring type rings come loose, I refuse to use them.

There is a little art form to using cotter pins.

The end of the pin should project no more than 2 diameters of the pin.
(1/8 Dia cotter pin, 1/4" Projection).

Open the ends approximately 10 degrees per side, no more is needed to
    keep the pin in place.

Also makes removal of the pin easy.

Form a pad from rigging tape and place over spread the split ends of pin,
then add another couple of wraps of tape around the pad and the
    turnbuckle to secure.

SFWIW, haven't been bitten by a pin end yet.

BTW, usually buy one length pin and cut to length as req'd. Simplifies
    the inventory.
