When portable phones were first introduced, the computer portion was in a
bag with a handset similar to a land line system. I remember them being
either 3 or 5 watts with detachable portable antennae and cable to external
antennae for mobile operation. Some had batteries in the bag, making them
truly portable. Mine had a cigarette plug to maintain power during long
conversations. This put the antennae away from the users head and allowed
greater power for use when towers were few and far apart. My friend opted
to buy the "old technology" from Nextel when he moved aboard. This allowed
him to mount an external antennae up the mizzen, and get excellent reception
in his pilot house. Now my phone would fit in the microphone compartment of
the old bag phone.
