Spent 27 years in the Merchant Marine. Every ship except one had my berth
(and all the other crew's berths I knew of) fore and aft. When the ship
rolled heavily we would stuff a life jacket under the edge of the mattress
away from the wall to keep us in the berth.

The ship with the athwartship berth was a 750 foot container ship on the
Indian Ocean run so we never did get the big seas of the northern waters so
we didn't roll heavily. But during what rolling we did I seemed more
comfortable because I wasn't being rolled back and forth as much.

Bandersnatch has it's berths fore and aft but there is a settee in the master
stateroom that we use sometimes for sleeping at sea. I find it more
comfortable that the berth when we are rolling a lot.

So I would say that the athwartship berth would be more comfortable when
    rolling aboard a motor vessel.

A sailboat under sail rolls less than a motorboat, but heels over
considerably, so I think a fore and aft berth might be more comfortable on a
sailboat because, although you would have to be either snagged against the
hull or the LIBOR's, one would not be rolled about as much.
