All,
In addition to the impermeable cover and three cotton mattress pads we modify
standard fitted sheets to fit our mattress, which is the size of a queen but
has a piece sliced from one corner to fit the berth.
We then attach three buttons equidistant apart along the edges of the sheet
along the long sides, and two buttons along the short sides. We then take
some elastic strap from the sewing store. It's about a half inch-wide like
is used for garters. We use lengths of the strap between opposing buttons to
keep the sheet stretched tight and the mattress pads flat. At first I used
the little gizmos used in garters to hook the strap to the buttons but after
a couple failed I discovered I only had to cut a little slit lengthwise in
the elastic strap, forming a button hole, that work fine on the buttons and
do not unravel.
I soon discovered it was a pain to reattach the straps involving crawling
around under the mattress so I installed small oval-head sheet metal screws
in the plywood in the vicinity of each button with the screw's head sticking
up a little. When it is time to remove the sheet I pull up the edge of the
mattress and transfer the end of the elastic strap from the button on the
sheet to the head of the screw, reversing the process when replacing the
sheet. It made a big difference.
I have used this system for decades of liveaboard life and the berth is
always dry and comfortable.
