Hi All,
It seems to me that the comparisons being made are not
equal.
If a cruiser wants to be able to repair his own sails,
he should not purchase racing (composite) sails. If a
cruiser wants to keep the cost per mile traveled low, he
should not try to motor through a calm. If a cruiser
doesn't always buy the latest and greatest new sailing
gear it's cost is irrelevant.
All other things being equal, you can not motor a
trawler from San Francisco to Mexico cheaper than you
can sail there. Faster? yes. With more concern for the
accursed 'Schedule'? Yes. Less physical work? Yes.
Less concern for weather? Sine.
Cheaper? Oh come on now,,,
