    A wire wheel on an angle grinder is one of the most dangerous tools I have
    ever used.
    Granted, it was a 15 amp machine.

    I would go at it with a standard 4" wheel for metal to take off about 90% of
    the material, then do the second pass with a flapper wheel or a rubber pad
    with stick-on sandpaper disks.

    In general, I have found that the 90%/90% approach works best. That is -
    remove 90% of the material with an agressive tool, then the remaining 90%
    with a much less aggresive tool (or a much less agressive touch with the same
    tool).
