Subject: Re: lv-ab: Sizing marine air and inverter?
One of the major problems with this setup is the startup current
required by the compressor. I tied this once with a 2600 (1800
continuous) heart inverter and a 6000 btu reverse air. It would not
start the unit but would run the unit. I started it with generator
power and ran it off the inverter. Next problem was after it satisfied
the demand it would shut down and would not restart.
Not a real practical method of cooling. Try a small box fan and a quick
shower. Works wonders.

Before you throw away your existing equipment as recommended by someone
earlier, I recommend you do the following :
1. Ask the manufacturer of your air conditioning unit to specify the "Inrush
Current" of their product.
2. Send the information to the manufacturer of your inverter and ask them if
they have a product that can handle the specified inrush current. (Include
part numbers and A/C manufacturers contact information.)
3. If the inverter manufacturer recommends the device you already have, then
call them back and ask them what to do with their defective product.
My point here is; if we don't push the manufacturers to properly and
completely specify their products, we will end up with unreliable systems in
our boats, designed by tinkerers using trial and error methods.
Good luck.
