I don't know guys, but this thread is making me uncomfortable. I know we
are all pro-US on the list, (or at least I hope so), but this list gets
international distribution and this thread is beginning to sound like advice
to terrorists, rather than the esoteric discussion it was meant to be. Can
we cease and desist this thread? Why not flame me instead, I'm leaving for
a race to Mexico and cruise for 6 weeks on Friday.

Subject: lv-ab: Reality Check at Norfolk

In a message dated 03-Feb-03 05:25:23 Eastern Standard Time,
     writes:

Norm is correct about Norfolk, but failed to mention how the Navy deals
with errant boats. If a vessel is getting close to the established 100 yards
safety zone, the Navy is very quick to contact the errant vessel by radio
and ask what its intentions are. I have heard several exchanges on the
radio, with the Navy ordering the vessel to change course. I would imagine
if it did not change course a gun boat would be after it in short order. The
    penalties for getting too close are harsh enough to discourage me: felony;
possible jail time; very hefty fines.

Reality check: A speedboat traveling at 60 Kt is going about 100 feet per
second. If it is at full speed, outside the floating rope which is about
200 yards from the bow of the carrier, and so about 300 yards from the
target, this is only 900 feet or nine seconds for the Navy to do whatever it
can to stop it up before it reaches it's target.

Picture the situation on a Saturday evening, after dark, with lots of
civilian boats buzzing about. An outbound speed boat, at the right edge of
the channel, closest to the carriers, suddenly turns it's lights off, veers
off toward the target carrier and comes up to full speed.

A nine-second clock starts counting down.

"Several exchanges on the radio", a patrol boat "after it," threatening
fines, jail time, etc.? Get real! Nothing but a perfect shot with a
missile or M60 gattling gun will have any effect on the speedboat.
Remember - NINE SECONDS from start to finish.

I just don't believe that everything necessary to blow the speedboat out
of the water would happen in less than nine seconds. I would put my money
on the speedboat reaching the carrier.

      Norm
