I'm currently living board in Charleston, SC. I'm at Ashley Marina. Staff
is friendly -- convenience store, laundry facilities, showers. Van
available to take you around town. Downtown accessible on foot if you are
willing to walk a little. Bus stop close by, if you want to get around.
Bridge limits you to 55 ft. mast height. Highly recommended. 843-722-1996
City Marina is also available on the Ashley River side. Restaurant,
convenience store, showers, limited parking. Access to bus stop. Walking
distance to downtown. No mast height restrictions. 843-723-5098
Charleston Harbor Marina is on the Cooper River side. Not sure it they
would accommodate an extended stay. No mast restrictions, but this marina
is more exposed. Close to Hilton with resturants, etc. Reasonably short
walk to Mt. Pleasant stores. 843-856-9996
All of the marinas in the harbor area experience 3 to 4 knot currents at
maximum ebb and flow. I would recommend trying to make first approach
close to slack tide. These three have easy access to the harbor for
daysailing.
Weather is usually comfortable here in October and first week or so of
November. It can get damp, penetrating cold here after that. It is real
hard to predict. We are expecting temps in the low 70's today and a high
in the low 50's by the end of the week. Freezing temperatures two weeks
ago burst water lines in the surrounding area.
Outside of the harbor area is Cooper River Marina in North Charleston and
Buzzard's Roost. Cooper River Marina is up the Cooper through all of the
bridge construction barges near the old Naval Base. Buzzard's Roost is
less expensive, but both would require some kind of transportation to get
around. Both are just more isolated. Buzzard's Roost is south of
Charleston on the ICW just past Elliot's Cut. I'd stay away from the
construction going up to Cooper River Marina if I could. Lots of big
equipment, barges, and pilings going in. Big container ships and a few
Naval ships are still going through, but there is less room to navigate
than there was six months ago. there is going to be several years of this
to contend with.
