Bob has converted a diesel car to electric to use in going to work.
He considered towing a genset on a trailer to extend the range. He
decided against it because the trailer would add so much drag. There
is someone who has done that, but the genset is screamingly loud and
very polluting. It's behind the car driver so it doesn't bother HIM.
At the time Bob did this (10 years ago maybe), hybrid cars were a
kluge. There was also a weight issue - having an engine, even a small
one, and a fuel tank in addition to the batteries would make the car
terribly heavy. And there was a space issue too. I suspect that a
good hybrid car would have been terribly expensive and difficult for a
single person without outside financial resources to built at that
time.
If you wanted to do this for a boat, the weight and space issues would
be somewhat less IMHO and therefore it might be more possible.
