We are usually "Up North". We like to be in Maine or Nova Scotia but this
year we got only to the Chesapeake.
We were anchored up the Penobscot River in Maine when Floyd went by. We had
no unusual problems. The weather was similar to ordinary stormy weather in a
winter Northeaster.
We have never had to deal with an actual hurricane but if we did we would
find a place to anchor with plenty of swing room and put out all our anchors
in a star pattern to a 3/4" swivel to which the boat is attached. We would
stay with the boat and use the engine to relieve strain on the anchors.
The main problems with boats in this weather, I have heard, is the danger of
other boats dragging down on you.
But in reality, fear of hurricanes is way down on our list of fears.
Much higher is being run into by boats under way, lightening, fire on board,
falling overboard, mechanical breakdown, and running out of rum (and gin -
Jan).
