You can fasten them from below, but you should never just drill through your
deck and install the screws. Most decks and cabin tops are cored with balsa,
plywood or foam. Unless properly done, water can leak into the core and
cause rot or delamination. Use the following process when drilling:

    1. Drill the proper hole for the bolt or screw.
    2. Clean out the core from inside the pilot hole, about 1/2" to 3/4" back
from the edges of the hole.
or - do #1, then use a hole saw to cut the outer skin and core without
    touching the inner core.
    3. Tape over the inside hole and fill the void with epoxy and high density
    filler.
    4. Re-drill the pilot hole
    5. Install the bolt, screw or fitting using plenty of sealant but don't
    squeeze it all out.
    6. Come back after the sealant is cured and retighten the fastener

In the case of mounting doirade boxes, I'd use stainless or aluminum "L"
brackets. Bolt one leg to the cabin or deck top and the other to the inside
    of the dorade box.

    Hope this helps!
