It is always a good idea to carry extra fuel. And here is a suggestion: Use
the fuel in the extra containers just prior to fill-up and you will not be
left with old fuel in the containers. Also, buy one of those neat siphon
hoses (see the boat shows). They have a copper fitting on the container side
with a glass marble in it. To use it, all you have to do is put the fitting
end into the container, and shake it up and down. The motion, causes fuel to
be "lifted" into the hose and starts the siphon action. It works great, and
can be used even in rough seas without spilling fuel.
I have 2 on-board. One I use for fuel only, the other is strictly for use in
my water tanks. I use that one to drain the tanks prior to winter storage.

Friends: We have done our research and now this is what we are doing: I am
dealing with www.floridamarinetanks.com. They have been very helpful. Since
we would have to cut out a piece of the fiberglass on the starboard sail
locker in order to remove and replace the 50 gallon tank, we have decided to
downsize from 50 gal. to about 38gal. This way we can cut up the old tank
and remove it in pieces. Then the new tank is sized to fit into the
starboard sail locker. I don't think there will be a problem with cruising
since we get 3 hours per gallon it will give us about 4 1/2 days of engine
time. We are coastal cruisers thus would have ample opportunity to fuel up.
Pamela, my navigator, advises me to also carry a couple of 6 gallon Diesel
fuel containers. Since we are still in the process we are open to any and
    all suggestions.
