I was looking at a Sigmar 120 heater in a boat on Saturday and there was a 3
inch duct running from a cabin-top fitting directly to the side of the
heater. I believe this duct feeds outside air directly to the combustion
chamber. None of this air is intended to enter the cabin so I don't think
you need to worry about recirculation of exhausted gas. This is the
"balanced draft" system. Anyone interested can contact Irwin Allen at

I believe Dickinson has a similar setup where a double-walled stack is used.
Combustion air comes down the outermost stack while exhaust gas goes up the
inside stack. They may exit the cabin-top at different heights.

It seems to me the real danger of the dual stovepipe
setup is that the intake air might get contaminated by
the exhaust. If there is sufficient space above deck,
this could be reduced by careful design, allowing the
exhaust pipe to extend well above the intake pipe. In
any event, a CO detector is a MUST when any combustion
occurs inside a boat (or any confined place).
