Mercedes used to make the same recommendation .... to use synthetic after the
break in period, but now all Mercedes are shipped from the factory with Mobil 1
    in them.

My "fascination" with Mobil 1 (and synthetic oil in general) comes from being
the owner of several older Mercedes diesel cars. And from participating in a
list of people who study these older cars and the oils that they run on .....
including taking the engines apart on many of these cars after running 100,000
to 500,000 miles or more on various types of oil.

After urging from the "oil experts" on the list, I changed one of my cars over
to Mobil 1 (not really expecting anything). But much to my surprise ... even I
could tell the difference. The engine was noticeably quieter. The mileage
improved, the oil pressure came up more quickly upon startup, less smoke .
There were no additional drips ... With dino oil, I could hear the difference
in the sound of the engine as the engine approached 2500 to 2700 mile and it
came time for an oil change ... the engine would be noticeably louder, with
synthetic oil ... it does not.

I have now changed all of my engines (cars, lawnmower, tractor, snowblower)
over to Mobil 1 15W50 synthetic all year round. I can leave the 8HP dual stage
(hand pull start) snowblower out in zero degree weather inbetween blowing bouts
.... and it hand starts easily.
