Hi:
I'm a "lurker" on the list but maybe can add something here so will give it a shot. Some years ago most of my surplus cash and then some went into race cars with a big chunk into the engines. Cold race engines don't like to start, especially after recent rebuilds. We were always paranoid about damaging bearings & such cranking the engine trying to get it started. As a result some of us bought pre-oiling systems. The best units had no moving parts but were just a canister which would store up to 2 quarts of oil pressurized under normal oil pressure. The canister was valved off before shutting down the engine (manually or with a solenoid valve) and then just before startup the valve was opened giving full oil pressure to the bearings before the engine turned over. Really simple as long as you remembered to close the valve while the engine was running! Actually you could use air pressure to pressurize the canister if you forgot.
I haven't a clue who made the device or if they're still available but I imagine a search for race car parts might answer that question.
Hope that helps!

There was a brief period of time when car racers had an
electric oil pump
for such a purpose, but the fad went away. I assume
it's because there was
no improvement noted. It may be that the extra pump,
lines and drain on
the battery outweighed any advantage

More likely it is because every race engine is
completely rebuilt after every race anyway, so why
bother?
