Ether works well and safely if used properly with my Detriot Diesel.
After the engine is spinning, press the button on the can of ether not
spraying directly into the air intake, then move the plume of spray toward
the intake more and more until the engine fires off. This is what I do and
there is no hint of detonation. Also be sure the ether can sprays a nice
mist, not a stream.
The idea is to give the engine just enough ether to get it going and not
enough to cause a big explosion in the cyclinders.
I don't believe the "washing the lube oil off the cyclinder walls'" to be
significant since there is oil between the rings and the oil is instantly
replaced as soon as the engine fires off.
