Florida has both a sales/use tax for sales there or boats
brought into FLORIDA WITHIN 6 MONTHS of purchase
or brought into Florida from out of country at any time.
THEIR REGISTRATION FEE IS A SEPARATE FEE.
If you buy a boat in Florida (sales tax) or bring it into
Florida (use tax) from another state within 6 months
from the purchase date (or from outside the US anytime)
you will have to pay the Dept of Revenue.
The certificate for yearly registration is different from the
sales / use tax and is small potatoes compared to sales tax.
My prior owner brought boat in that was out of state licenced
in Missouri that no sales tax had been paid on. Since it was
documented and had more than 6 months registration in
Mo. no Florida sales tax was required.
If you buy a boat from a broker to go out of state from Florida,
there is no sales tax -- but only if you buy from a broker or dealer--
and if you don't bring a boat in sooner than 6 months afterwards.
Also if you bring it in for boat repairs they won't collect tax
from you while its there for repairs... Authorities for the sales / use
