    Eric,

I steer my outboard independantly with a fabricated tiller and am quite
satisfied with the arrangement. When away from the dock, I lash it so it
stays centered. When leaving or coming into the dock, I do most of my
maneuvering with the outboard at low speed. There's no need to mantain
steerageway upon approach when you can come in slowly using the directed
    thrust of the outboard.
