You're right. The undercounter type consist of several prefilters, and RO
filter and a small tank and are for purifying tap water. They are very
different from a watermaker, and use a different type of RO filter. I have
one of these at home and it does a great job on our very dirty well water,
but I'm not sure it's the right thing for a boat, unless you connect it to
dock water and let it fill your tanks with clean water. This would require
some monitoring since I don't think there's a way to automatically shut
them off due to the way they're valved, and the flow is very low. To use
one to purify the water already on board would require a relatively high
pressure pump (and the juice to run it) and a substantial amount of waste
water dumped down the drain, neither of which is desirable on a boat away
from the dock.
My point in making my original statement is that the claims made for these
little filters you attach to your faucet may lead you astray. They may
filter out some of the grit and if they contain activated charcoal they
will remove some chlorine, but they will not purify your water. Solvents,
bacteria and viruses will pass through most of these filters. There are no
standards for water purity coming out of these devices, or in fact for
bottled water. Buyer beware.
