Not to defend Village Marine, but it is easy to see that they might have
meant "lifetime guarantee" to have been a promise to replace the various
parts of the equipment at the end of the part's expected lifetime, not
just whenever it breaks. I'd check the small print to see if they
didn't define "lifetime guarantee" in just that way. This being the
case, they should have pro-rated the cost of the part to its expected
lifetime.
Anybody that devious might deserve some points for being clever, but
like you, I will add them to my list of businesses to be wary of.
