Concur. I had the radio on a Crealock 37 with huge ground plane of copper
screening and strips - all soldered together. A "pro" installed it and it
wouldn't transmit. I installed it again after ICOM "repaired" it and then a
replacement (by ICOM) with guidance from ICOM and the dealer - it would not
work. I understand DC and was an Army Morse code radio operator, but do not
pretend to understand SSB radios. Mine received fine. It could transmit for
a short period and then each of them died. Jim Tindall of the now defunct
Coast Navigation took the radio back for purchasing credit - he's now with
Maritel.
If at all possible, I would get rid of the radio. Basically, the vendor is
selling a known defective product. ICOM should have eaten them and they
should permit you to "upgrade" to a product that works. ICOM could arrange
for you to purchase the radio from http://www.hfradio.com/ and they could
guide you through installation. Their advertising sounds good.
