There's a kludge on some CDMA/TDMA "digital" phone networks. You don't want
to know how it works behind the scenes. Sprint PCS probably does it better
than anyone, bad as it is. This is how they do "wireless internet" on
those phones with "integrated" browsers, etc.
Others simply fall back to analog - which pretty much limits you to a
9600-14400bps connection.
The beauty of GSM is that it can run 56kbps of real data. The better news
is that true G3 (still a bit off) will handle broadband-style speeds.
